My name is Atem Mutou. I used to be pharaoh of Egypt until the Shadow Games threatened to destroy my country. I sealed the games away, but I also had to seal myself away inside the Millennium puzzle in order to protect the world. 3000 years later, however, the games were reincarnated, and I was released from my prison by Yugi Mutou. Together we saved the world, but I was faced with a choice to stay on, or go to the afterlife once the world was at peace. To decide my future, my aibou and I had to fight a ceremonial duel. I was the victor of that duel, but I decided to remain in spirit form inside the puzzle, not wishing to live separately from Yugi.

However, that all changed nearly two years ago. Yugi and Jounouchi were dueling in the park one day when they were caught in a sudden thunderstorm. Somehow, lighting struck the holograms of their monsters, and reacted with the puzzle. As a result, I was given a solid body, but during that incident, I was blinded, and broke my back in the resulting fall, leaving me a permanent blind paraplegic. Yugi dropped out of school to care for me full time, and I am living as full a life as I can manage given the circumstances. I am not bitter. I have learned to accept my blindness and paraplegia. Yugi cares very much for me, and he is most likely the reason why I am still alive. I owe everything to him, and he is my brother and my best friend.
